patchouli, a bushy herb in the mint family that bears small, pale pinkish-white flowers, is a plant that has been used for centuries in alternative medicine, incense and perfumes. originating in the tropical regions of asia, it is now cultivated in china, india, indonesia, west africa, malaysia, and many other parts of eastern asia. the plant and its essence have been used to induce relaxation, treat headaches, colds, nausea and abdominal pain. in addition, it is thought to cure oily skin and to stimulate the growth of healthy hair. it has been described as very beneficial for the skin, preventing wrinkles and chapping. also, it is believed to be a vein tonic, and may aid in digesting toxic material in the body. patchouli oil has been used as an all-purpose insect repellent. energetically, the oil is considered warm in nature and is thought to help ground and stabilize the an overanxious mind, bringing one back to one’s body. in japan and malaysia, patchouli is used as an antidote for venomous snakebites. during the 18th and 19th century, silk traders from china traveling to the middle east packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves in an attempt to prevent moths to lay their eggs on the cloth. it is speculated that the association of patchouli with eastern goods caused europeans of that era to consider patchouli as a luxurious scent—-queen victoria herself had her linen closets lined with the plant!
