happy hanukkah! we’re celebrating the first day of hanukkah with a look at the color blue (and blue flowers, of course), as it is associated with the holiday. blue and white are the colors of the tallit (jewish prayer shawl) and the israeli flag (which portrays the star of david on a tallit). also, some jews believe that since blue is the color of the sky, it is meant to remind them of heaven. according to rabbinic sages, blue is connected with god’s glory, and gazing at the color blue is thought to assist in meditation. it is common to light blue candles on a menorah each night of hanukkah. flowers in a true blue color are somewhat hard to come by — most veer into purple or violet tones. so we treasure the rare blue blooms—-delphinium, larkspur, hydrangea, and wildflowers like cornflowers, forget-me-nots, or morning glories. a gift of blue flowers during hanukkah may symbolize trustworthiness, confidence, intelligence and unity…
